Nuwara Eliya, "Hill Country"
Sri Lanka's hill country is filled with attractive mountains, forests and tea estates, creating a fantastic nature and travel paradise. Nuwara Eliya is the main town in this region for travelers, being a good base for visiting Horton Plains park or hiking and going to tea estates in the surrounding area. The town itself was a hill station during British colonial times, allowing colonial officials to enjoy a bit of the home country. As a result, there are colonial-era bungalows, a charming brick post station, a golf course, and a horse-racing course that actually holds races at certain times of the year. Of course, there are also tea estates which cover the surrounding hills with very attractive layers of green and waterfalls that fall from sheer cliffs. As it is, getting there by train is half the fun because the over-100-year-old rail line goes through the hills, letting you enjoy sweeping views of valleys and mountains.
